Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could commit her time to writing, reading theatre, and various other pursuits. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights protest over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma led her to make a film that focused on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still at college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the rubbish of one members of the juries. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalistic work by the assignments that she was assigned, the journalist chose to go on to a job as a publicist. DuVernay was brought on straight after graduating from college as the junior publicist for an unassuming studio. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
